Hello, everyone! I'm Kit, here with my OC, Lilac! She's from an original universe I've been toying with for the past year that can best be described as "what if dragons were themed after gemstones and flowers". I'm not very well versed with dwrp, but I've been wanting to join you all for a long while and finally decided to take the plunge!

It's great to meet you all! :) You can find me on plurk at [plurk.com profile] kitastrophe but I'm much easier to get ahold of on discord (kitstellation#3166)!

Everyone passed AC! That's all there is to it lol

Congratulations to everyone for clearing the Superbia arc of the story with aplomb! Superbia is a part of the story I'd been excited to get to for a long while before we arrived and I really feel like that enthusiasm went double for you guys! Some exciting new mysteries and questions about the story of Can Cry have come to light and I hope you're as excited to work towards the answers as I am!

With that, there's just a few things we need to touch on before going forward.

Gula, the Gluttony Layer has been unlocked! The Executors will have ten days of downtime to recover from the previous Underside's battles and the intro log will be posted on November 10th. In advance of the intro log, however, I want to give players a heads up about some of the content expected to be at play there. Namely, Gula will touch on themes of pseudo cannibalism – more specifically (highlight to read:) [ Specters consuming the remains of Revenants. ] If this bumps into a squick or a trigger for anyone in the game please let me know in advance so I can make adjustments to the content of the story before moving forward.

And speaking of moving forward... let's talk about that!

With the start of the Gula arc of Can Cry's story, we are well into the back half of the game. More specifically, after Gula, there will be only three Layers before we reach the Cogs, at which point endgame will begin in earnest. Because of this, here are a few structural and schedule notes for the game going forward:

⚝ The order of the final layers are as follows: Gula -> Luxuria -> Acedia -> Ira -> Cogs
⚝ Gula will be slightly lighter on plot and will proceed at a player-dictated speed. In order to give players a bit of breathing room after the wild ass Superbia Underside, Gula is planned to have a relatively relaxed plot. Players will only have one major task and will be free to come and go from the layer as they please. Characters are free to use this time to train, investigate just who the hell the evil sword girl is, or progress further in whatever character arcs you'd like to pursue. The Gula arc will end when all players are in agreement that they are happy to move forward, but will last at minimum one month.
⚝ Luxuria will be the last 'standard' Layer prior to endgame. Players will still have to deal with Authorities and the like in the Sloth and Wrath Layers, but each will have their own atypical gimmick and will have to be dealt with in a manner different to previous layers. Luxuria will be the final layer that follows the investigation/identification/reclamation gameplay loop as Invidia, Avaritia, etc.
⚝ Final submissions for power & memoria regains will cut off following the end of the Ira Underside.

Additionally, the entry on the powers page for the Executors' new Empathy ability will be going up sometime in the next few weeks! My apologies for the delay on that – while I was in the process of doing the writeup, I had some worries about clarity of use and balancing issues with regards to the investigative portions of the game. I've been smoothing those out and have about gotten it to a place where I'm happy with it, so keep an eye out for that!

That's all for now! As always, if you have any questions or feedback, please leave a comment below and let me know what's on your mind! It feels a bit surreal to be getting so close to the end of Can Cry when it's been my constant companion for almost two years now. I'm beyond stoked that the game still has such an engaged and dedicated playerbase and I can't thank you guys enough.

    See you in Gula, Executors!

Congratulations, Executors! You did a fantastic job of solving the mystery of the Pride Layer of Purgatory and unlocked the Superbia Underside! The dungeon log will go up on October 10th, which gives the characters a week of downtime to decide on their approach.

As such Boss Combat Signups signups are now open! However, due to plot reasons, this Boss Combat encounter will be a little different to ones that have occurred previously. Signing up to this means you acknowledge and agree to the possibility of this encounter having a negative impact on your character. Because of this, these signups are a complete free-for-all – anyone can sign up, even if you have already participated in prior Boss Combat encounters.

Pop down to the toplevel below and leave a comment there if you'd like to participate. We have three spots open and signups will close midnight GMT on October 7th so be sure not to miss out.

As usual, comments are also open for any commentary or feedback players wish to provide. Thanks as always for your time!

Happy October! It's time for activity check. Passing AC is pretty easy though because I'm gay and don't have time to count comments!!! Just respond below with two threads with separate characters, of any length that are timestamped in the month of September and you're golden!

Characters who apped in the month of September do not have to submit AC.

You can also use this post to give your fellow Executors a heads up about anything notable your character has done or found in the game this month that you feel the group should know about.

The deadline for AC submission is 11:59PM GMT, October 7th. Characters who do not submit their AC by this deadline will receive a strike.

Hello everyone, this is Gray, the guy who plays a bunch of obscure manga/book characters and also a ton of Pokemon OCs. Today I've spun the wheel and decided to bring Susan Hana Nishio, aka Genius, from Kamisama no Iutoori Ni, a very gory and trashy death game manga. But Susie resonated with me a lot and I wanted to give her a better sendoff than she got in canon.

As suggested by her title and icon, she's a mathematical genius, though she's forgotten most of her math skills. Still, despite her nerdy appearance she's fairly quick to befriend people, and I hope you'll all enjoy playing with her!

Due to the fact that she's from a very trashy manga, I have a pinned permissions post on her journal that I'll also link here. Please let me know if you want to opt out of any specific interactions!

The situation in Superbia is beginning to deteriorate.

On midnight of the seventh day, no matter where they were or what they were doing, every Executor on the layer will suddenly find themselves returned to the exact spot they were in when they first arrived in the layer a week ago. Investigation of the Layer will reveal that the usual effects of the loop's restart have occurred, leaving only one conclusion to draw.

The loop has reset seven days early.

From here on out, the Superbia time loop will end every seven days, giving the characters only one week of time to investigate and hopefully end the loop. Why has this happened? What effects will it have going forward?

And can you truly put a stop to it?

    Good luck, Executors.

Two weeks after the Executors arrive in Superbia, they discover the truth behind their inability to leave.

On midnight of the fourteenth day, no matter where they were or what they were doing, every Executor on the layer will suddenly find themselves returned to the exact spot they were in when they first arrived in the layer two weeks ago. Things will seem completely normal to the Executors, but as they explore and interact with the Specters in this layer, they will realize something.

Time has been reset. The last two weeks have been completely wound back to the beginning and while the Executors all retain their memories, the Specters do not. How is this happening? Why is this happening? And how do we make it stop?

Congratulations on reaching the end of your first loop in the Pride Layer of Purgatory, Executors!

... Oh, did I forget to mention that part?

The entirety of the Superbia layer and everyone in it is trapped in a time loop!

Spanning IC and OOC weeks, Superbia is trapped in a timeloop that keeps everyone in the layer confined, never allowing them to leave. At the end of each two week period, a new log will be posted, signaling the start of a new loop. There will be a toplevel in which players will be asked to summarize any significant actions taken in the last loop on top of the usual investigation requests.

Your task on this layer is not just to usurp the Authority but to stop the timeloop and allow yourselves to escape. How do you do that? Well... that's up to you to find out!

Players are encouraged to investigate to uncover the true extent of the timeloop's effects. Up front, I will give you the information that the Executors' memories are all persistent while the Specters' memories are reset with each loop. Being trapped in the loop for too long will eventually have an effect on the Executors as well, but... why don't we cross that bridge when we come to it?

I've been so, so excited to unveil this aspect of the Superbia layer to everyone, so I hope everyone's ready to be stuck in high school for the rest of your unlives!!!! Please feel free to comment below if you have any additional questions about the loop you would like to have clarified – otherwise, get out there and investigate and have fun!

CAN CRY: FOURTH TDM

Welcome back to Can Cry's fourth TDM! If you're unfamiliar with the game, then you can check out the interest check, FAQ, world & setting info page and the powers and abilities page to get up to speed!

Due to the slightly wonky timeline, threads on the Can Cry TDM are overall not considered canon, but players may consider individual threads to be canon for their CR.

Characters on the TDM will have access to all of their starter powers as outlined on the powers page as well as two unique abilities to play around with as you please.

Some prompts and location details have been provided below for you to play around with but please feel free to go hog wild and have fun!

AVARITIA

Larger than life and brighter than bright, Avaritia is the Greed layer of Purgatory. Despite sitting under a permanent night sky, Avaritia blazes with light of all kinds, in searing, strobing neon colours. Jazzy, mid-tempo music spills out from every corner of the streets and there always seems to be someone laughing, shouting, crying or making some manner of raucous noise. Unlike the previous two layers, Avaritia does not have any pretense of being a real, functioning settlement and instead presents itself as a city-sized monument to hubris and gambling. It's... well, it's Vegas, baby! Or it's a rough approximation of the general aesthetic and feel of Las Vegas's repuation, but, you know. Same difference, really.

As well as being perpetually dark, Avaritia is also perpetually rainy. For the most part, this is just a thin drizzle that only barely makes itself known but on occasion, the heavens will really open up. Because of this 24/7 rainfall, the streets are constantly damp and dotted with puddles which quite frankly, with all the lights and signs reflecting in the wet asphalt and puddles, looks fucking dope. This, combined with the thin fog that's constantly seeping through the place, gives Avaritia a similarly disorienting effect as Limbo, where it can be hard to exactly find your way through the streets, even if you have a good idea of where you're going.

The actual structure of Avaritia is rather scattershot. Rather than streets, most of the buildings are grouped together into small clusters, leaving wide open spaces of asphalt for people to congregate. This is to provide room both for the tidal wave of Spectres constantly coming and going but also for the many pop-up stands and kiosks that are pitching their wares to potential customers. Some of what they're selling is food, but a lot of it is gaudy accessories or clothes or trinkets or any kind of overpriced souvenier you can imagine.

What does stand out in Avarita, however, are the four main buildings that the entire layer is more or less built around: the two banking towers, the vault and of course, the casino. Each of these buildings stands out against the skyline and the other buildings in its own way, so if you're ever terribly lost, you can use these as a landmark to re-orient yourself.

Avaritia is markedly different from the previous two layers in that it runs very much on our old friend, capitalism. Unlike Limbo or Invidia, you won't be able to trade or barter here. The only kind of payment the residents will accept is cold hard cash, in the form of fat golden coins, colloquially referred to as "novas". Each coin is printed with a denomination of either 5, 10, 25 or 50 and prices in Avaritia run high – even your average shit-tier fast food meal will easily run you thirty nova. How you make money in Avaritia is up to you – but even if they won't barter, the Spectres of Avaritia are always up for a good gamble...

Avaritia is a big-ass location, so to get the full lowdown on all the deets, check out the location page!
QUESTS

Since it's up to Executors to maintain order in Purgatory, this also means they need to resolve any issues that crop up for the Spectres occupying it. You can come up with any sort of quest you like, but here are some ideas to get you started:

⚝ A fight has broken out in the casino between a handful of Specters who were gambling together at a card table. One accused the other of cheating, the other made a very rude remark about the first Specter's parentage and now the gloves are off! You'd better break up the fight and see just how much weight that cheating accusation has.
⚝ You hear a rumor of disappearances in some of the more run-down areas of Avaritia and when you go to investigate you find a stray Revenant that's found its way up to the Layer from the Underside! It's causing chaos and no end of property damage so you'd better be rid of it.
⚝ While out and about, you hear rumors that the theater is being haunted by a masked woman who calls herself a "Phantom" and is demanding payment from the owners of the casino for some unexplained slight. She's uh, not the most original soul but does she have a legitimate beef? You'd better investigate and find out!
⚝ While giving the casino a try, you happen to get lucky and strike it rich with a small fortune! Lucky you! Of course, now you have to deal with the absolute mob of Specters coming your all way who just want to borrow (or outright steal) some or all of your cash.

Feel free to NPC Spectres as you need for this TDM!
THE UNDERSIDE OF AVARITIA

Descending into the Avaritia Underside is like willingly throwing yourself into the deepest, darkest pits of sensory hell. The Greed Layer has never been a particularly friendly looking place but with it distorted into a labyrinth of flashing neon signs, oversized casino machines and Revenants swarming the streets, it's as though everything that makes Avaritia unbearable has been turned all the way up to eleven.

It's... not a fun place to be!

To make matters worse, things are loud here – as well as all the noise from the casino machines, music blares from an unseen source and the Revenants laugh and chatter and babble between themselves even as they fight and kill for the grubby Nova coins that can be found scattered around. It's a deeply unpleasant place to be, but this is where Greta has ended up and if you want to proceed then you have no choice but to plunge into this neon-drenched hellscape.

    AREAS OF INTEREST

⚝ Main Street: The main street of the Underside is kind of a hot mess. Whatever buildings might have made up this street before are long gone, some crushed and destroyed by the regular outpourings of coins from the giant slot machines and some having been ravaged and destroyed in some fight or other between Revenants. The street is lined with grubby, battered novas that have changed hands so often that the metal has worn smooth. Even so, the Revenants here fight over the money viciously, biting and scratching and killing over even a single coin.

⚝ Fort Nyx: The already labyrinthine layout of Fort Nyx's underground vaults has somehow managed to get even more confusing with the transition to the underside. The upper layer that once housed the bank has vanished entirely, leaving wibbly wobbly corridors that snake down deep into the depths of the vaults. You'll want to move fast as you travel through here, as the vault doors will occasionally burst open and a particularly aggressive Revenant will burst out, intent on protecting whatever meager treasures it's managed to collect and keep in the safe.

⚝ Et Voila Casino: You might have heard the term 'casino pit' before but this is pretty ridiculous! The interior of the casino has been replaced with a knee-deep deposit of gold novas that's not super easy to walk through. To make matters worse, there appears to be some kind of sinkhole at the center of the building that all the coins are gradually being pulled into. Thankfully, there's plenty of dilapidated casino machines and fixtures to climb up onto and keep yourself safe... but the place is absolutely flooded with Revenants who have absolutely woken up and chosen violence today. Stay on your toes!

This is a general prompt for combat-oriented testing, to allow characters to experiment with their new powers as Executors! Because of that, and because combat will function slightly differently in-game, this section is pretty loosey goosey. Like previous posts, you are free to invent locations and NPC Revenants to make things more fun and exciting!

If you would like some ideas for what sort of Revenants to battle, you can check out this video to see what sort of enemies exist in the original game, but beware that it does contain spoilers for Crystar.

(the results are that everyone passed june ac lol)

Congratulations to the Executors for clearing the Avaritia Dungeon! I'm sure everyone is EXTREMELY READY to move onto the next Layer of Purgatory and I'm happy to report that the Superbia intro log will be going up on July 14th. This means there will be a ten day break between this dungeon's ending and the next Layer getting started. This is a slightly longer break than I had originally planned to give us but there's a few reasons I wanted us to have that extra time!

Part of this is giving everyone some OOC and IC time to unwind from the dungeon and to do any Memoria, power and journal housekeeping necessary before we move on. This is important because characters will be restricted to the location of Superbia during this next layer. They will not be able to leave or travel to any other layers until the Authority has been reclaimed. If there's anything you want to do on the other layers before we move on, please make sure to do so!

The second, and most important, is to take some time to make adjustments to the content of the game going forward. The Avaritia layer lasted much longer than anticipated and there were several times where it was clear there was a desire to do something but a lack of direction as to what. This is absolutely not the fault of any individual player, but more a case of the original vision and design of some of Can Cry's locations and plotting simply not gelling with the needs and playstyles of the current playerbase. Some adjustments will be made to both the Layer setups going forward as well as the Boss Combat system to hopefully trim the fat and speed things along a bit more.

I've said before that I don't want the vibe of the game to change or for things to become less chill, but when there are stretches of dead time where people are struggling to make up activity for lack of things to do, then that's a failure on my part as a mod and something I need to address. But I truly do appreciate everyone's continued patience, their dedication to the game even though the rough patches and, of course, your incredibly dank memes. I honestly can't thank you all enough!

And finally; I mentioned this briefly on Discord but we are just under a month away from the game's first anniversary! As of August 1st, Can Cry will have been running for an entire year which is kind of amazing to me?? I'd love to do something special to mark the occasion (both OOCly and even ICly, if I can get away with it!) but I'm drawing on a bit of a blank as to what! If you have any ideas as to what we should do to celebrate game's first year, please let me know!

As usual, if you have any feedback, please leave it in the comments below and thanks again for everyone's continued participation in Can Cry!

    See you on July 14th!

Hello, Executors! Congratulations on clearing the Greed Layer of Purgatory and unlocking the Avaritia Underside! The dungeon log will go up on May 27th, so we have a week of so of downtime for everyone's characters to wind down after the heist.

Boss Combat Signups signups are now open! Pop down to the toplevel below and leave a comment there if you'd like to participate. We have three spots open signups will close midnight GMT on May 25th so be sure not to miss out. As a note before proceeding, some small changes have been made to the boss combat signups.

Out of the final group of three characters who will be participating in the combat thread, two of those three slots will be reserved for characters who have not participated in Boss Combat yet. Since we're squeaking close to the planned halfway point of the game, this is to ensure that everyone who would like to try out a Boss Combat thread will have the opportunity to do so. Once all players in the game have taken part in a combat thread, this system will be dropped and the regular blind RNG rounds will resume.

As you may have noticed up from that there post title, though, this post is also a feedback request for the Avaritia mission as well as going forward.

Both in Invidia and Avaritia, I've noticed periods of slowdown/pauses in activity during periods of investigation or mission plotting in which players and characters uninvolved in the plot can be left hanging or with a sense that there isn't anything for them to do. I'll be up front and say – I'm not sure how to resolve this!

This is partly because, in my mind, Can Cry was always intended to be a game driven primarily by player agency and character action, probably closer in spirit to a DND campaign than your average DWRP game. I want players to feel empowered to do cool nonsense anime shit and know they have the freedom to ask me about letting their characters get involved and doing stuff!

In hindsight, though, I'm worried that this freedom feels more like a lack of direction for players, and if there's more we can do to give everyone something to engage with during these slower periods of the game. That said, I'm not looking to massively increase the game's pace or vibe, as I think Can Cry being more slow and chill is part of its appeal.

That's just my two cents, though! Like I said, this is primarily a feedback post for players to chime in with their opinions, so if you have anything to yeet at the mods, please do so!

Thanks as always for your time and look forward to the Avaritia Underside!
